Turkish delights and a pulled muscle.

Welcome to the GunnersoreArse blog. Being blogged 918.74 kilometers (in a straight line) from the Emirates Stadium. Thought an extra post was appropriate this week to start off the Champions League campaign.

And yes, Champions League football once again. And a trip to Turkey once again. And a weakened side through injury once again. Reports are a bit vague but it would appear that Gibbs is out, Koschielny is out and Per still isn’t match fit… or is he still on holiday? I had my team selection all ready and now there’s uncertainty. Besiktas should really not give us any problems but with such a weakened defence, who knows what may happen. After Saturdays late, late win against Palace and some fairly poor performances, you have to wonder what tonight may bring. Below is the team I was hoping to be fielded.

football formation

But now fate has intervened, the injury Gods have not smiled on us kindly and just after only one Premier League game, Wenger is having to ‘make do’ once again and juggle the team around with youngsters and players out of position. I know there are still two weeks left of the Transfer Window but the problems in our defence have been obvious for some time and it’s very surprising that a Centre-Back hasn’t already been purchased. Perhaps Wenger was starting to think that Callum Chambers would be the one and perhaps he will be eventually, but that belief will be severely tested tonight.

Going out in the Qualifier is unthinkable. Because what it means is Thursday night football along with the Spuds. But with such an inexperienced defence that could well be a possibility…….. it would be ironic just as people are talking about us havingย one of the strongest sides we’ve had in years, that we fail to make it to the group stage. Not that that is likely to happen, but it’s a possibility. So we could end up with something like this for tonight’s game.

football formation

I would see Arteta and Rosicky in defensive mid-field duties and Ramsey just ahead of them, feeding Campbell, Alexi and Giroud. But if the team sheet ends up like this then we are in crisis already. What cover for the back four will be on the bench? Will Mert be brought into the team early when Wenger has been saying that if he returns too soon there is the risk of injury? Questions are being asked already of the lack of movement in the Transfer Window after our first four signings. TV5 looked as if he was always in the frame for a move so CB cover was clearly a priority. Chambers has commendably covered for the BFG but there was always a risk of Gibbs and Kos getting injured. So despite some reinforcement up front with Alexi and Campbell, the defence has been left out of the equation. On Mertesacker, Wenger has said:

“I planned to bring the Germans back in contention for Everton but, in case of emergency, I will take Mertesacker to Turkey,” Wenger said. “It’s a bit early for him – ideally he would need one more week preparation but he’s willing to play, no problem. We are a bit short.”

Koschielny was in training yesterday so the panic may be for nothing, lets hope so.

I think we’ll see Wenger quickly dipping into the market over the next two weeks. A new defender has to be a priority, who I don’t know and really I don’t care. We need cover for the two central defenders. I’m looking forward to tonight’s game but with a little bit of trepidation.

Enjoy the game wherever you are and let’s have faith that we can get a win.

  1. Having a tea break and my client has let me use her laptop… Morning wankers! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lovely day today, St Remy de Provence in the sunshine and if it gets too warm I have a nice pool to dip into!

  2. Charming greeting tosser ๐Ÿ™‚
Way too much clothing in your picture.
Looking forward to a stiff training exercise tonight.

Kelsey’s 2-9-0 might be an option though, if things get tough. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. motning, ahem, afternoon NB and all. ๐Ÿ™‚ We do not need our cannon to swat a fly. Let us hope the good guys, whoever selected, turn up on the day and play with pride. Can be a tricky game, “1-0 to the Arsenal” does me fine. ๐Ÿ™‚

    COYG. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi Honey I’m home ๐Ÿ™‚

Michael., next time I’ll look for a photo with nude belly dancers…. but then you wouldn’t look at the wobbly belly would you ๐Ÿ˜€

    arnie, good morning mate

    I too think we’ll get a win… perhaps my pre-match was a bit pessimistic.

  5. There was once an elderly actor who did Shakespearean plays, but had aged
and could no longer remember his lines!
After many years, he finds himself in the Halifax Theater in Canada, where they are prepared to
give him a chance to shine again.

The director says “This is the most important scene in the play and you only have one line.
You walk on to the stage carrying a rose.
You hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, sniff the rose deeply and then say the line, “Ah, the sweet aroma of my mistress.”

The elderly actor is thrilled. All day long before the play he was practiced his line over and over again.

Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, and using just one finger he delivered the line, “Ah, the sweet aroma of my mistress.”
The theater erupted, the audience was screaming with laughter and the director was steaming!

“You bloody fool!” he cried “You have ruined me!”
The elderly actor was bewildered “What happened, did I forget my line?
“No!” screamed the director. “You forgot the rose!”

  6. Looking forward to the game, we are very fortunate here in Ontario as we get to view all of the Arsenal games. Besiktas will be no easy task, but I feel that we will be too good for them and will get a result – even a 1-1 draw will be enough in my view.

Having watched our team this season I’m a tad concerned that we won’t be able to compete with the power/strength/depth of Chelsea and Man City. Based on those feelings I would predict that we will finish 3rd with Chelsea 1st and Man City 2nd and 4th place being a battle between Liverpool, Spurs, Man U and Everton.

  7. aha, good afternoon/ evening all, game approaching. I will have to rely on some dopey stream. ๐Ÿ™‚

NorthBank, a pint of bitter, please Sir. ๐Ÿ˜›

Doomer GN5. Come on, sing “1-0 to the Arsenal”, we will be OK. I agree we may not have the team to win the league, but I could be surprised. But we certainly have a good enough team to win a trophy, and that includes the CL. COYG. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. My heart is with you arnie but I feel that my thoughts are realistic and we still lack a) A power striker b) A central defensive “terminator”

With those 2 additions I would feel a lot more positive – but nothing will stop me enjoying the season ahead.

  9. GN5. ๐Ÿ™‚ Let us see. I am not giving up on our strikeforce just yet. A CDM will be good, though. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Looking forward to the game. ๐Ÿ™‚ But, GN5, I have not got my drink yet! Such injustice!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  11. โ€œWhatโ€™s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweetโ€

Dooming by any other name โ€ฆ. ? ๐Ÿ˜›

  12. arnie, the pub only opens on a virtual basis, in reality NB never opens the doors.
Right now I think he’s out looking for the rose that he lost!

I’m over at the Nags Head and they are showing the game, beers on me.

  13. NB,
At this stage of the game, even bits that wobble have an effect.
It surely has to be an open game tonight, which should play into our hands. Keep the humble pie warm for me.
Nice letter in football 365 from a Liverpool fan re Cesc.

  14. Allegedly:
Szczesny (GK), Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal; Arteta (c), Ramsey; Sanchez, Wilshere, Cazorla; Giroud

Subs: Martinez, Bellerin, Miquel, Flamini, Rosicky, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell

  15. That’s the correct team arnie, it was just shown on Arsenal .com.

arnie I think that NB was waiting for us to leave so that he wouldn’t have to serve us!

Should we give him one last chance?

  16. yes GN5, let us give NB the benefit of doubt. the poor man is having too many chorizos to juggle! ๐Ÿ˜›

  17. NothBank, my dearest friend, how have you been? Long time no seen! I thought the SoreArse was shut for renovation. Such a pleasure to be back. ๐Ÿ˜›

A pint of bitter, please Sir! ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. What straw? None for me, please. But some pork scratchings will be nice. Please. Thank you, good Sir! ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Oh dear! Single malt is the only way to go, although I’m down to a 12 year old Chivas Regal – which isn’t bad. It was a gift from a dear friend who passed away 2 years back, a wonderful man who played for both Liverpool and Spurs in the late 40’s early 50’s. I drink it sparingly, and I think I will have a sip today – he would approve.

  20. I’m off to watch the game on our 60″ I’ve only got a 32″ in the office.
I’ll be back at half time – hopefully we will all be in a good frame of mind.

  21. see you laters, GN5, let me look for a stream. ๐Ÿ™‚ Lovely stuff, NorthBank, thank you Sir. ๐Ÿ™‚

    COYG. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. sad to hear that, GN5. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ anyway, there is always Arsenal. We can share our joys and tears in equal measure. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ COYG!

  23. Sanchez has had a great 1st half and has made several scoring opportunities, but unfortunately Giroud has two left feet and is having an awful game. Come to think of it he’s been shocking since the pre-season games.

  24. Well, you can have my summary. Poor passing and toothless. NB if you want to cut and paste it , your welcome.
Would have liked to see Campbell instead of Santi at half time. Chambers is a bit good.

  25. In a word. Bollox.

So lethargic, Arteta injured, Ramsey misses the return. It won’t be a walkover. To be honest I expected better though The Ox was unlucky.

2 games in and most of them looked knackered. Think i will take up painting ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Evenning Sorearses

Nice post 69, especialy those belly dancers.

    I have two questions.

Firstly, how much will we beat the Turks by in the 2nd leg? ime going for 3-0

Secondly, how long will it take before 69 shags his client? If hes knackered now, imagine what he will be like by tommorow night. He dont do half bad for a geezer who looks better upside down. hahaha

The Ghosts of the Thirties are Stirring

  27. OK, I have now released my frustration at the doom all round. On AA, not here. All to play for. But hard work required, work in progress. COYG. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. What is the difference between a socialist and a religious follower. It is in where they place the counterfactual.

For a socialist, it is on the idealised best state of the world. A situation of perfect equity. Barcelona at its best a few years ago. Any deficit from that state creates enormous dissatisfaction and sorrow even anger.

The faithful on the other hand places the counterfactual on the worst possible outcome. A Cardiff or Dundee supporter expects to lose every game, and is happy with whatever crumbs come along. God is great!

The illusive true optimal must lie somewhere in between. It is this balance that is so difficult to strike. ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Now it is the pitch. The Turks weren’t even playing at home. 2 more injuries and a red card and AW says fatigue. A bit concerning to say the least.

  30. Morning All
A quick whip around the blogs, and it is hard to find anything other than a brave face about the match.
It’s good that there are such things as excuses, pitch, fitness, ref, lack of baby changing facilities etc.

  31. I am not concerned at all. We will thrash them in the return.

We played to deep and 2 of our front 3 have no pace. Ozil will come in, play wide left with sanchez right and then we will smash everybody.

  32. Lunchbreak

Just had a dip in the pool, now having some nice Charentaise melon, parma ham and a tomato and feta salad. Washed down with chilled Cotes de Provence rose.
I’ve brought my laptop to the site today.

On last nights game, a 0-0 was a fair result. Ramseys red was silly and perhaps not deserved. Giroud pfft
Chambers a star in the making.

  33. The annoying thing however is, if we had beaten Villa in the first game of last season and beaten Stoke away, we wouldn’t be having to go through this stage now.

  34. hmmm, using one’s arse to communicate has never been a good idea, never will be. there are other better uses! time to lie low for a bit. shhhhh! ๐Ÿ˜›

  35. Repeating myself but never mind.
2 games in and Ospina,Gibbs,Arteta,Sanogo,Diaby and Walcott are all injured and Kos isn’t 100% fit but had to play last night.
Flamini took a knock and will be a banker to see Red soon, so we remain top of the injury league.

  36. Kelsey. ๐Ÿ™‚ you guys are too generous. My comments last night were a bit offensive, I think. I blame it on Bunnahabhain 12 yo. Underage, some may say! ๐Ÿ˜›

  37. Good evening campers

I get home from work and find arnie saying someone was talking out of their arse and that he was offensive. Kelsey saying that farting is polite and not a doomer in sight ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Off topic.. are we ever on topic long enough anyway.
In China, it is polite to leave some food on the plate, if invited for dinner. Now don’t you all feel better for knowing that?

Kelsey, the injury list is as they say in french incroyfuckingable… so soon.

  39. NB. That someone talking out of their arse was myself. Work? What work? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Michael. Off topic? Is that not the point of pub conversation?

4 hours wait for the flight. Back to Scotland tomorrow. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  40. It’s a bit late arnie, but have a good trip mate ๐Ÿ™‚

    Morning all

This working lark ain’t what it’s made out to be…. getting up too early, slogging ya guts out all day and getting home knackered. Glad I don’t do it too often ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Morning All,
Kelsey it might not be too bad if AW visits goalscorersrus first.

Looks like Poldi is on his way.

  42. Back to pavilion safe and sound, to a delighfully cool and damp Edinburgh. ๐Ÿ˜›

Kelsey, I agree, Saturday can be a nightmare. Except that Everton drew 2-2 against Leicester City (Away) while we scarped a win on matchday 1.

All to fight for. But we need to show some quality upfront. Still, dont agree with Giro-bashing. No surprise there. ๐Ÿ˜›

  43. I will be in touch, Kelsey. ๐Ÿ™‚

hmm, Poldi out, is it? A bit sad, but not a big loss for the 1st team. Maybe a loss for the squad and the dressing room though, I suspect. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  44. So Wnger saying Poldi going nowhere and Chambers will be ok against Lukaku………. so chambers ahead of the BFG on Saturday.

Lunch break whey hey… dip in the pool, it’s been fucking hot here today. 30c at least.

  45. OK time for a little moan. I get progressively annoyed when it comes to signings, AW says that he is looking to strengthen, but where? Chambers may or may not be the next coming at the back. TV was obviously going (hindsight I know). A striker, who is realistically there? He has all but ruled out a DM, and then says we are not close to signing anybody. Is nobody the signing?
It could all be rubbish, and everything will be clear at the close of the window. If the team looked like a team fine, but to me it certainly doesn’t yet, and 2 banana skins looming.
    Doomer or realist.

  46. Kelsey
Have to disagree on Balotelli, when 4 top managers don’t want him, to me says more than his occasional wonder goals.

  47. Wouldnt say your dooming Michael, just a touch frustrated.

I never get pissed off over Arsenal. I started going in the mid seventies when the crowd would sing “were so shit its unbeliabable” and cheered when the other team scored. I thought Brian Mcdermot was the best player in the world for fucks sake.

Kelsey my friend, no Balloteli for me. I tend to have a problem with fully grown men that i could not trust with a box of matches

  48. Good evening you muppets ๐Ÿ™‚

Balloteli…….. for ยฃ16m…….. yes, well worth the risk. 30 goals in 52 games. He’s growing up now, nearly an adult and he looks good in the bath with those two birds in the Puma advert. Wenger should have taken him under his wing.

  49. But more importantly, I’m struggling with choosing my Fantasy PL team for the weekend. At the moment it’s looking like this:
    —————————– Howard————————–
    –Debuchy—- Cahill—————-O’Shea——Chester

Giroud has been dropped to the bench but I’m going with us getting a result… I may change keeper to Mannone. I know what you are gonna say…….. I’m a slut for having Rooney and Fabregas in my team ๐Ÿ™‚

  50. TMHT
You could be right. Watching us play Benfica was like a breath of fresh air, yippee I thought, then Monaco, Palace and Besikas we looked just ordinary. To hope for a top 4 finish this year, something out of the ordinary needs to happen. Arguably we have mostly the players, what is missing?

Fair play to the person who invented “copy and paste”
    Ironically an original idea.

  51. Michael. Since I have withdrawn my “what’s in a name” moan ๐Ÿ˜› , a realist is no longer to be confised with a doomer. ๐Ÿ˜›

Seriously though, early days this season IMO. Except for the Besiktas game. If they come at us, as they should and probably will, and we do not concede (is it possible?) then we will go through. ๐Ÿ™‚

Am I a bit nervous? Yes. Oh dear! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  52. If Podolski isn’t in the squad he is off.
Then surely he must buy as we have a certain amount of experience,a certain amount of promising players and a certain amount of what I would call young experiments but above all a whole lot of injuries already.

  53. Kels

With Arteta injured with no real explanation as to how long? Your guess is as good as mine, could be two weeks… could be two months? But AW needs to now dip into the market and get a DM. Unless that is he thinks Diaby will do the job?
If Poldi goes then another CF will be needed. I won’t mention Balotelli…. oh dear, I just did ๐Ÿ™‚

  54. Saturday? 1-0 to The Arsenal. ๐Ÿ˜› And I might yet call myself a “realist”. Whether anyone else agrees, who cares? ๐Ÿ˜›

    Scorer: Sanchez. Assist: Giro.

And now I am giving Crystals real competition! ๐Ÿ˜›

  55. If players read the blogs, I would be curious to know who reads what, and they surely do occasionally.
Poldi would surely be an arseblog fan, possibly, maybe.
    Well that my 2p worth.

  56. Re Diaby, I don’t want to appear unsympathetic and my memory being poor, I can only think of 1 game where he looked like the real deal, away to Liverpool 2 seasons ago. Some players ability often gets seen through rose tinted specs the longer they are off. If he starts 6 consecutive games this season, I’d be stunned.

  57. Morning all

I envy you NB it relives not so distant memories of laying in the sun in my villa and then having a dip in the pool.

As for tomorrow if we get one more injury or straight red we are in serious trouble.
I can’t believe AW won’t buy someone this month,if he doesn’t I feel we are stretched.

2 of the new signings are replacements for Sagna and Fabianski, Chambers looks really good and he is a Wenger sort of player by being able to play in more than one position, but surely he can’t play every game in the opening period.

Pers will come back for sure but pray Kos doesn’t get injured.

Alexis will be fine but overall our net spend is about 14 million as I forgot Vela. Not exactly pushing the boat out,is it.

  58. morning publord and patrons. Kelsey, you forgot the most important signing of all. Shad Forsythe. ๐Ÿ˜›

  59. Michael. In general, it depends on where you are looking from.

If you are in the UK, assuming NB is having a snooze somewhere in France, eastern front. If, on the other hand, you are in Mecca or Constantinople (take your pick, depending on your preferance), it is the western front!

If you are Erich Maria Remarque, it is always teh Western Front! ๐Ÿ˜›

  60. Western or Eastern……. it’s all quiet every where ๐Ÿ™‚

    Evening all

Just home after a nice apero in St Remy after a dip in the pool. So nice to have that after a sweaty day at work.

I’ll be putting out a match preview post tomorrow. So you can all rip me apart for my lack of footballing tactical awareness. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Whisky needed…….. I’ll serve myself.

  61. NorthBank. Can I have one as well, please? ๐Ÿ˜›

Am I looking forward to Everton away tomorrow. Oh dear! Dont know. ๐Ÿ˜›

  62. Coming up arnie my friend

I’m not sure I’m looking forward to tomorrows game either. I just hope AW changes his tactics slightly. Hold out defensively for first 20 minutes then hit with fast counter attacks. Problen is, if Giroud plays, that won’t be possible, so I’m hoping Olive is benched after his last two performances.

  63. Thank you, NorthBank. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hold a different view on Olive, as you might have gathered, and I have just posted on AA a video of the Jack goal again to remind everyone. Form is temporary, class is permanent. However, form matters for results. So, all I am saying is that I know bugger all. But I am happy to trust Arsene.

Having said that, I am so tired on AA. Giro-bashing, Jack-bashing, even Islamophobia. I just want to have a drink peacefully. ๐Ÿ™‚

  64. arnie

Then this is the place to be for a peaceful drink or two. ๐Ÿ™‚

I like Giroud and he can do the job most of the time but I think with more pace in the side with Sanchez, he may struggle. The last two games he was fairly anonymous.

  65. Im first waiting patiently for words of “wisdom” the drinks are on me all day if you get it right.
    My money is safe lol.
    nรญos moille

  66. Morning all

I had to have a rather unpleasant procedure in hospital yesterday and just getting there was an ordeal as you NB know, but at least I didn’t have to stay in overnight.
I have just read your debate with Shard on AA and someone should have moderated some of those comments. AA is a football blog but with usually an early morning bit of banter which is quite harmless but politics and religion shouldn’t be debated on there IMO.
It’s not a very nice world we live in and the angst is spreading.
I would just like to say that Malky Mackay knew exactly what he texted and unfortunately a lot of people think one thing privately but actually say the opposite publically, and he being in the limelight it has been exposed. He doesn’t need councelling as I am 100% sure especially at his age he will never change.
    Right back today.
Late Saturday night football is not one that we do very well generally especially away and Rambo will be a huge miss as he and he alone would be the most likely to score on players available.
Everton have a formidable defence and I wouldn’t read too much in their opening game draw at Leicester.
Will Pers play and Chambers be benched or will he keep the same team as the last game but with Flamini coming in for Arteta.I would like to see The Ox start but not sure for who.Hopefully Kos is fit as it was 50/50 that he would start in Turkey.Anyway I will wait to read what NB previews.
